This project started as a serarch for a Norwegian identity within furniture design. We looked at aestetics, materials and production methods from the post war era and up till today. By doing this we hoped to find some criteria that we could use further in the project.
The 50s and 60s became our main source for inspiration. Norway had a more industrial approach in the design, compared to our fellow Nordic counries. But other than the honest construction there were more similarities than differenses between the furniture design in Norwegian and the rest of the Nordic countries.
To give the chair a clear Norwegian identity, we needed an added value. A value that would give the chair a more clear connection to Norway. We looked at the Norwegian nature and culture for inspiration. To others, the Nor- wegian nature is exotic with its contrasts; steep mountainsides, woods and fjords.
Our findings created some guidelines that we used to design the chairs Ym and Ym junior.
