One of the main reasons for accidents or near accidents at sea is human error. This was the starting point for this diploma. It was a collaboration project with Ulstein Power And Control. The goal was to look at solutions for handling excessive information, building a understanding of dangers and improve the life quality of operators of an automation system. It was also a exploration of possibilities in communication besides the visual and auditive.
Research on existing automation systems laid the grounds for the project. Observations was done on the system Ulstein use to control their ships, called Ulstein IAS, short for Ulstein Integrated Automation System and Aller Trykk.
The end concept is a mobile device which alerts the user when a potential danger arise. A machine room is noisy environment therefore the user is alerted using heat and physical output. It is mobile because observations revealed that operators of automation systems is often deprived of activity and sit static for long periods of time. IAS mobile enables crew to move around while still being alerted of upcoming dangers.
